Worship, Study, and Music

Worship

Worship service begins at 11:00 a.m. in the sanctuary. The sacrament of holy communion is celebrated on the first Sunday of each month.

Fall time of year brings rain, lower temperatures, and falling leaves. Fall is a time for reflection, recommittment, and restoration.  As much as springtime gives us new hope and optimism, so fall aims us toward the celebration of Christ's birth and the hope of new life in Him.

If it seems like we go around in circles, I suppose that's what we do.  However, with each passing season and with each passing year, the circular pattern (the circle of life) further emphasizes our need for God's love and surety in our lives.

The foundations we were brought up with and the relationships we developed, then and now, help nurture the seed of desire and hope that God placed in each of us even before we were formed in the womb.  We search for our place in the world and for God's presence in our lives.  The journey continues!

Study

The David Shane Sunday School begins at 9:45 a.m. in the fellowship hall, behind the sanctuary.  Study materials vary, and we always have a good time exploring God's message for us.  We use materials that follow the lectionary.

The Bippy Cook Circle is a women's ministry that meets the third Friday of each month for study and fellowship (we do not meet in July or August).  Please email Mary Cameron if you'd like more information at maryc2@austin.rr.com.  Our study year begins in January, and ends with a Christmas meal in December.

It may seem odd that our Adult Sunday School class and Women's Circle are named after members of the church.  Both David Shane (who taught the Sunday school class, and was a consistent, vibrant member of the church), and Bippy Cook (who firmly believed in women's studies, and was the first female elder to serve this congregation, in 1983), faithfully served the church in these respective areas.  It seemed right and good to keep these two saints from the Church Triumphant in the forefront of our studies.

Music at Leander Presbyterian is centered on the scriptures. Our pastor uses the Revised Common Lectionary as the springboard for his sermons, so hymns are chosen to complement those verses. We use the old red hymnal titled “The Hymnbook”(c. 1955), and the blue hymnal, “The Presbyterian Hymnal” from 1990. These are traditional hymnals which we sometimes supplement with “Favorite Hymns of Praise” from 1967, a Tabernacle Publishing Company publication. Please let the music director, Lila Aud, know of any hymns you would like to sing, and if they are in our hymnals we will work them in in the near future. If not, she will endeavor to find them and play them for you.

We have done one study of hymns and their origins, a study which was developed from a list compiled from members of the congregation.

Our congregational singing is most often accompanied by the piano.
